(Shareholder)
Matthew Stephens received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and received his law degree, with honors, from the Chicago Kent College of Law. In 1998, he was admitted to the Illinois Bar and later admitted to the US District Courts for Northern and Central Illinois. He has spent his legal career with Stone & Johnson, Chartered, starting as a clerk, and currently is a shareholder in the firm.
Matt’s areas of practice include litigation of products liability cases, construction defect, and insurance coverage. Examples of recent products liability cases include defending manufacturers of light trucks, bass boats, radiators, punch presses and steel processing equipment. These cases primarily have been litigated in Cook County and the Northern District of Illinois.
Commercial contractors are another client base for litigating personal injury and construction defect claims. These construction cases have multiple parties and have issues ranging from fraud, breach of contract, and indemnity to installation of defective products.
Risk transfer, when possible, is always a goal, and he has successfully litigated all aspects of risk transfer. Matt also enjoys counseling clients on how to achieve risk transfer in contracts as well as addressing the constantly changing world of insurance coverage.
